In an on-going saga to both promote and embarrass Ari Kelman for his fantastic book, A Misplaced Massacre: Struggling Over the Memory of Sand Creek, I present for your consideration a talk that Ari gave at Gettysburg College recently. CSPAN was kind enough to record and post it. I have done some work on Sand Creek and the messy politics of writing about it (see my MA Thesis, a 2009 journal article on Sand creek, and a 2011 anthology chapter on genocide). I have enjoyed Ari’s book as a very satisfying answer to many of the questions and ideas that fell outside the scope of my own work. If you have been unable to get your hands on his book, or would simply like to learn more about the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 or consider some complex examples of historical memory, click here and enjoy.
